Rowley, a crippled veteran of the war of the rebellion and a citizen that any community might claim with pride, with his four brave boys, are in a great measure responsible for the splendid showing made below. Rowley and sons commenced sawing shingles February 3, 1889, and up to May 20, 1896, had sent 45,000,000 shingles to market. The timber is taken from the land of Mr N. Tompkins,to whom stumpage is paid. In 1893 father and sons commenced manufacturing boxes and up to date have turned out 37,000 apple, cherry,peach, plum and tomato boxes, to which output fish boxes will be added.The quiet accomplishments of Mr Rowley and sons furnish an example worthy of emulation by the croakers and malcontents with whom we too often comein contact. James W. Rowley was born in Steuben County, New York in 1834; came to California in 1883, and to Humboldt in 1883. The sons were born in Floyd County, Iowa.

Obituary--January 1902: Death of J.W. Rowley - James W. Rowley, a well known and highly respected resident of this section, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs Carlin Kinman, on Table Bluff last Friday evening after a short illness.
Deceased was born in the State of New York March 27, 1835, in 1882 hecame to California and the following year moved to this county where he has resided every since. For several years he and his sons conducted a shingle mill near this town, but a few years ago he was compelled by failure of health to retire from active life. Mr Rowley was universally respected and admired for his many splendid traits of character. He leaves five sons and three daughters to mourn his loss. They are William, George, Edwin, John and Henry Rowley of Fortuna, Mrs Burr Chapman of Fortuna, Mrs Carlin Kinman of Table Bluff, Mrs W. of Eureka. The funeral took place from the Christian church last Saturday.
