Relationship=7th great-grandson of Roger Billings.
      Roy Noble MacDonald was also known as LeRoy.3 He was born on 19 January 1915 at Rome, Oneida County, New York, USA.4,5,2 He was the son of James Allen McDonald and Charlotte Ethel Noble.3,1 Roy Noble MacDonald was listed as the son of James Allen McDonald in the 1920 US Federal Census for 407½ West Dominick St, Rome, Oneida County, New York, USA.6 Roy Noble MacDonald was listed as the son of James Allen McDonald in the 1930 US Federal Census for Lower Taberg Rd, Lee Township, Oneida County, New York, USA.7 Roy Noble MacDonald married Doris Iona Hoige on 28 January 1940.8,2 Roy Noble MacDonald was left a widower by the death of Doris Iona Hoige on 24 February 1980 at Rome, Oneida County, New York, USA.9,8 Roy Noble MacDonald First house recalled was on Dominick St. (SE corner of Dominick & Madison) in Rome, NY. There was a horse barn south of the house, used for the Erie Canal boat horses and mules. Later moved to a four family house in the next block ( 400 block) west on the south side of Dominick St., near Jay’s Pharmacy. Got free rides on the trolley to Liberty Street School (later Barringer School where grandchildren attended). Family bought small 5 acre farm for about $500, on Skinner Rd. (at the end of Slone Rd.), in Lee Center in 1922, from Jud? or Jed? Fox (horse trader). Summers were spent at the farm, winters (school time) were spent in Rome ,at a rented gray house on 500 block Whitesboro St. just past Jay St., on the Erie Canal (now Erie Blvd.) between Arsenal St. and Jay St. (Lived upstairs for awhile., then lived downstairs. Wife's maternal grandmother lived in the downstairs of this house during the time he lived upstairs.) Used to ice skate on the old Canal. Remembers when the canal was filled in, that they dumped old horse drawn hearses and buggies, beds from Rome Bedstead, and nickelodeons (that played the cylinder type records) into it. Also remembers a winter when the he was able to walk out the second story window onto the snow.
In 1929, after the “Crash”, the family moved permanently to the farm in Lee Center, NY. They raised calves, pigs, and chickens for meat. They also had horses. He remembered one small, white mare (an albino with a pink nose and eyes) in particular, who was very fast and wild. He was the only one who rode her, because she would turn quickly and throw people. Sister Lillian, was best friends with his future wife-to -be Doris, who lived down the road on the corner of Skinner Rd. and Brookfield Rd. Doris’ mother tried to keep them apart, because she wanted him to date her daughter Dorothy instead.
Remembers a cheese factory at West Lee Corners where they experimented with using whey to make a type of butter substitute instead of giving the whey to pigs. Also remembers playing on a railroad engine in Lee Center that was from an unfinished railroad to there. Lee Center was a more self sufficient town at the time. There were two stores, one being Hartson’s on the north side of Main St. next to the Masonic Temple. He remembered that you could get almost anything either from there or by ordering from Sears, Roebuck. There was also another store near the corner of Main and Thomas. The town also had a barber shop, and another store (opened inthe 1930s). A daily horse stage ran from Point Rock to Rome, going through Lee Center. It carried the mail and newspaper. The stage was run by the Paine family. Roy worked for Harold Paine’s father, who was a horse trader and carpenter. Food was kept cold by ice, which was harvested in the winter in 300 lb. cakes and stored in saw dust through the year. He had helped harvest ice.
In 1929, he worked on a farm for Stewart Preston at Preston Hil lFarm in Camden, NY. In 1931, he worked for Ed Hyde, courts tenographer in Utica. he took his driver’s license test and Mr. Hyde brought it home to him the same day. In 1931, he helped his father wire their house with electricity from a 32 volt Delco glass battery that was charged with a gasoline generator (regular electric lines did not exist in the area yet.) In 1934, he worked for Charlie Munger in Deansboro, NY and agreed to run his farm for one year. He said it was a very tough year. Mr Munger was financially in the hole because of the depression and asked if he would run it for a year if he bought some cows, which he did, buying sixty cows. He ran the whole thing alone, including cooking forhimself. The cows were excellent and would each give 150 pounds of milk a day, compared to 60-70 lbs, which was the average at that time. They had to be milked three times a day: 4am, noon, and 10pm. He also raised 12 acres of cabbage, plus peas, and potatoes. Between the milk and the cash crops the owner was able to recover his losses. He also remembered when he first went there, being given a team of horses who no-one would drive, because they would run away and break things up. He hitched them up in the winter to a full manure boat and took them to a tall hill. He let them run until they tired They never gave him any more trouble. When the year was up and the new person came to the farm, they were coming back from a field of cabbage. He walked and the new man took the team, who promptly ran off with him, along with a full load off cabbages, which went flying everywhere! 1934-1935 Worked with Lee rounds(electrician) wiring rural electric lines. 1935 enlisted in the Army.Took a boat from Brooklyn down through the Panama Canal to San Francisco,then onto Hawaii for basic training. Spent the whole tour of dutythere. Last name was accidently changed to 'Mac' instead of 'Mc',during his tour in the Army. This spelling was used from then on.Returned to Rome, NY and worked for Revere Copper & Brass as a foreman.

Doris Iona Hoige1

F, b. 10 February 1917, d. 24 February 1980
     Doris Iona Hoige was born on 10 February 1917 at Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, USA.2,1 She married Roy Noble MacDonald, son of James Allen McDonald and Charlotte Ethel Noble, on 28 January 1940.3,1 Doris Iona Hoige lived with her aunt(?) Lydia Hogan (and used her surname) for the first part of her life. Then was called home (Rome, NY) by her mother when she was old enough to work. She enjoyed visiting her maternal grandmother, Martha Delano Greeney, and sleeping on her feather bed. She did not have a birth certificate and was not sure if her name was Iona Doris or Doris Iona, also the year of birth was not positive. The family later moved to Lee Center, NY on the southeast corner of Skinner Rd. and Brookfield Rd. She became close friends with Lillian McDonald, her future sister-in-law. She once saw her future husband plowing in a field with horses, and commented to her friend Lillian how handsome he was, only to find out it was Lillian's brother. At about 14, she left home to go to California. She took a bus across the country and only had one sandwich to eat the whole trip.When she got off the bus in California, two men took her by each arm and started walking off with her down the road. An older Mexican lady stopped them and took her in and fed her. She stayed there awhile until she got a job. She eventually worked for a Jewish family who treated he rvery well. The husband was a Hollywood producer or director. She returned home to NY about 1933, but returned to California for a few years, until returning to NY permanently. She used the name Maxine Alden while in California. After returning to NY she started dating Roy McDonald who she latermarried at the age of 23. After she had both of her children, during times of great poverty, a wealthy, old boyfriend from California showed up in NY, and wanted to take her away. She very soundly refused.1 She died on 24 February 1980 at Rome, Oneida County, New York, USA, at age 632,3 and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Lee Center, Oneida County, New York, USA.3
