His selection was due to his character, anti-slavery beliefs and experience fighting in the south for the north.3 He married Ella Marion Cobb on 2 August 1900 at Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA.1 Leonard Lorenzo Billings died on 22 October 1939 at Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina, USA, at age 96.1,2 He and Ella Marion Cobb died without issue.1
